From FOMO to JOMO

FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) has become a buzz word, but it’s all-too-relevant for most of us.

Especially in holiday times, there is so much going on around us that beckons our attention and calls for our time: parties, shows, concerts, that special shopping ritual, and on and on . . . .

I like people. I like activities. I like to be in the mix. And I like to say “yes!”

The problem is that the fear of missing out transmutes into mental, emotional and physical spinning. And what gets spun out of us is our time, energy, and creativity.

If you are subject to the FOMO syndrome, check out JOMO: The Joy Of Missing Out.

It was while I was spinning in too many directions that I first heard about JOMO, and the concept brought my spinning to a screeching halt. “Give me a shot of JOMO! Please!”

Whereas FOMO compels us to say “yes,” JOMO enlivens our boundaried self that knows how to say “no.” JOMO discerns what is and isn’t right for us. It leads us to clarify how we want to spend our time and energy.

The clarity that comes with JOMO not only helps us say no, it also strengthens who we really want to be. It supports us in reducing what is false for us and expanding what is true.

As we find our essential self and live out of it, life takes on a different quality. We think, feel, and act differently. Life gets easier and is more enriched.

In this season of festivity and endless options, JOMO is really about saying “yes!” to what matters most. It’s about saying yes to work and life that are centered in intentionality and integrity.

Perhaps the real gift of this season will come with doing less and trading in FOMO for a big helping of JOMO!
