Something is converging overhead this month, and it resonates with everything we've been exploring in our Ego, Soul, and Spirit and Spiral Dynamics series. Astrologer Yasmin Boland, who has studied the skies for more than twenty-five years, says she rarely encounters a planetary configuration that stops her in her tracks. This one did.
A word before we begin. Many people dismiss astrology as hooey, and I'm not interested in convincing anyone otherwise. I think of humanity's wisdom traditions as a symphony played by many instruments. Astrology is one voice in that music. Some of us resonate with its tone; others leave it out of the mix. Both approaches are perfectly valid.
What draws me to astrology isn't its predictions but the patterns it points to. Across cultures and centuries, people have observed meaningful relationships between the movements above and the movements within human history. Like the moon's influence on the tides, astrology proposes that the larger cosmos exerts archetypal influences. It doesn't determine events, but it may create conditions that make certain possibilities more likely to emerge.

Around July 19–21, the five slow-moving outer planets - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto - form a rare geometric configuration unlike anything previously recorded. French astrologer André Barbault devoted much of his life to studying these long planetary cycles. Before his death in 2019, he described this period as a pivotal hinge between the crisis cycle that began in 2020 and an era in which our world would be fundamentally reshaped. His much-discussed forecast of a global pandemic beginning around 2020 has brought renewed attention to his work.
Astrologers point us toward some key symbolic themes that are activating with these rare planetary alignments:

For me, that translates into becoming people who are grounded in body, open in heart, clear in mind, and deeply attuned to Spirit. In other words, learning to live more sacredly, in harmony with ourselves, one another, and our living planet.

Saturn calls us toward integrity and mature responsibility

It's almost as though the heavens are reflecting the Ego-Soul-Spirit and Spiral Dynamics journeys back to us!
Yet every invitation carries a shadow. The same energies that awaken can also inflate. Jupiter can become certainty without humility. Pluto can become power without wisdom. Neptune can drift into fantasy instead of awakening.
Every threshold presents both possibility and peril. These archetypal currents don't determine what will happen; they simply offer possibilities that can be expressed through wisdom or fear, compassion or domination.
So as July unfolds, I invite you into a simple contemplative practice.
Whenever you notice the day's news, events in your relationships, sensations in your body, or movements within your inner life, pause and ask:
Am I contracting toward fear or opening toward curiosity?
Am I shrinking into my own narrow frame of reference, or holding this moment within a larger sacred context?
The planets cannot answer these questions for us. Only our own awakened attention can.
Whatever the skies are or aren't doing, they invite the same posture contemplative practice has always encouraged: not grasping for certainty, not collapsing into anxiety, but remaining awake to the extraordinary unfolding of life within us and around us.
In one way or another, the heavens are speaking, and we are invited to listen.
