When the World Descends, the Soul Arises

There’s a growing sense that we’ve entered a long season of descent—the world we have known is unraveling. Many people feel an unsettling sadness in their souls for what’s happening around us. And in a culture that worships ascension—progress, improvement, upward momentum—fear and confusion build like an immanent storm.

We know that we can either deal with our fear, grief, and anxiety, or it will deal with us. This is true individually and collectively. And though descent feels disorienting, and it remind us of an inevitable truth: we are vulnerable, interdependent creatures that need one another.

Our spiritual traditions know that descent is the domain of the soul. It’s also where depth, clarity, and new beginnings take root and form.

Grief specialist, Francis Weller, says that in times like these, we must learn the disciplines of the soul:

  • Deep listening—quieting the body, heart, and mind so we can hear wise guidance

  • Restraint—expanding our ability to wait and let things ripen

  • Not knowing—remaining open to mystery and what is emerging

  • Letting go—releasing control in exchange for a wider trust

These are not skills we develop alone. Like the wild networks of roots and mycelia beneath the forest floor, our inner lives depend on connections—on community, elders, companions, and the shared wisdom of others walking the path.

The importance of soulful communities at this time can’t be overstated, and it has drawn me to create the Living the Sacred Life Community. We need places where our inner lives can breathe—where we can share fears, rest in presence, and allow the sacred to meet us in unexpected ways. When so much around us is unraveling, we’re called to strengthen the inner strands of soul—to expand our interior lives and root ourselves in what is enduring.

We certainly can’t control the descent the world is in, but we can choose how we journey through it—rooted, awake, connected, and held by community.
